Reflections on Producing My First Podcast
In preparing this assignment, I went through what I consider to be the normal stages of deer-in-the-headlights fear and confusion. As a Business Communications instructor, I’m certainly familiar with the sound of my own voice – ahem – and have often created multimedia to enhance my lectures – in other words, to help keep my students from snoozing through their class! However, this was my first experience with Audacity, Audioboom, and even with finding open-source audio that fell under the Creative Commons license, so the curve was a bit steep. I wonder if anyone else also found it a challenge to pack his/herstory of involvement in online spaces into 3 minutes...?
I was surprised to discover that, when doing some online research with regard to creating a podcast, that those that actually used the applications/software to develop a podcast – kind of in meta-composition style – were the most helpful. As I rehearsed and reviewed my cuts, I was surprised to hear just how much the selected music affected my message. When I have more time and experience with this, I will be more selective with regard to cutting and pasting soundbytes to fit my verbal message.
Finally, this first assignment threw me a curveball I hadn’t really expected. Actually putting my thoughts to script showed me not only how reluctant I’ve been to participate online and why, it also made me realize how far I’ve come in the digital world – as well as how much further I need to go in order to realize both its and my potential.
Links and Visual Inspirations
When composing my script, I visualized several metaphors with regard to my own digital literacy, many of which were inspired by listening to the 51 Keywords video we watched this week. A few phrases have jumped out at me as I’ve viewed and re-viewed the video:

Connections
I’ve realized how essential it is to be digitally literate and adaptive to change in the digital world in order to stay employable, to be able to connect to others by combining digital media to present a current, competent, employable persona – another great Washington Post article echoes the presentation Jaylene linked to her Twitter feed and her posting for this assignment, but places it in context of business and employability. It summarizes effectively that which I try to convey to my students; it also reinforced how important it is for my teaching to model this for them.
We Cannot Hide and We Can Do Anything

Nice podcast, Lisa! I like how you highlighted the language & cultural differences, using your husband’s experience. I thought ‘to table your idea’. Feeling at home on two continents, speaking two languages and understanding expressions in a few more, I am fascinated to observe how people find ways to express the same things, using different words (or how expressions get opposite meanings in different regions where the same language is spoken). Listening to your podcast made me think whether the new digital communication we are all using these days is going to make deeper these differences or will bridge the cultural gaps.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your podcast and in particular your comment about the "kinship that emerges when participating online." I think this is very true when participating in online communities but wonder if it is not as apparent in social networks where too much connection and sharing can result in negative consequences, like online bullying, etc.
ReplyDeleteOK, Jessica, the podcast is now embedded!
